Equally important is knowing how easily that security can be bought or sold in the market.

This characteristic is known as liquidity a fundamental element of secondary market dynamics. Greater liquidity facilitates the interaction between buyers and sellers and contributes to a more active trading environment.

But what happens when there are few participants willing to buy or sell? This is where a specialized figure comes into play: the market maker.

What Is a Market Maker?

When an investor wants to sell a position, they need to find a willing buyer. Conversely, a buyer needs a counterparty willing to sell.

A market maker is a specialized participant that maintains an active presence in the market by continuously posting bid and ask quotes on specific securities. In doing so, it helps investors find trading opportunities more readily.

Its role is not to guarantee that a transaction will be executed, but rather to contribute to a more dynamic and active market.

How Does It Work?

When an investor wants to buy or sell a security, they need a willing counterparty. Without a market maker, this depends entirely on which participants happen to be active in the market at that moment and their interest in trading that particular security. When buyers or sellers are scarce, finding a counterparty can be more difficult and trading activity less frequent.

A market maker helps drive this process by continuously posting bid and ask quotes on specific securities. This gives investors an additional avenue to execute trades. Its participation is designed to facilitate trading — it does not guarantee execution, nor does it set the price of the security, which continues to be determined by the interaction of market supply and demand.

Why Does It Matter for Investors?

Liquidity becomes particularly relevant when an investor is looking to enter or exit a position.

When few participants are actively trading a security, finding a counterparty may take longer, or the spread between the price at which someone is willing to buy and the price at which another participant is willing to sell may widen.

The presence of a market maker can help:

Facilitate the matching of buyers and sellers

Support greater trading activity

Generate broader price references as part of the market’s price discovery process

For this reason, liquidity is a factor worth considering when evaluating an investment, alongside return potential, risk, and investment horizon.

Does the Market Maker Set the Price of the Security?

No. The price of a security continues to be determined by the interaction of market supply and demand. The market maker participates in this dynamic through its bid and ask quotes, but does not unilaterally determine the price of any security.

Nor does it guarantee a specific return or eliminate the inherent risks of an investment.

In other words, liquidity and returns are distinct concepts: the former refers to the ease with which an asset can be bought or sold, while the latter relates to the economic outcome of an investment.

The Market Maker in Pei

Pei’s Equity Securities are traded on the Colombian Stock Exchange (Bolsa de Valores de Colombia), where investors can buy and sell them in the secondary market.

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the trading of its securities, Pei will onboard LarrainVial as a second market maker, joining Alianza Valores. This addition seeks to contribute to greater trading activity in Pei’s Equity Securities and broaden access for international investors.

Understanding how this mechanism works allows investors to gain a deeper insight not only into the asset they are investing in, but also into the infrastructure that makes secondary market trading possible.

When investing in a publicly traded security, understanding its return potential is only part of the picture.
